Recently, we received a message from Scott Robb, a customer of ours for many years. He’s currently in Bishkek, the capital of Central Asian country Kyrgyzstan, checking out a market and bazaar that’s housed along the ancient Silk Road trading route that was used from China to the Mediterranean.
Thanks so much to Scott for sharing his photos and his experience with us. We have to admit, it was VERY cool to receive messages, along with these photos, from so far away!
UPDATE: We've received even MORE photos from his experience. Check them out below!
Sometimes, it’s not easy to make the healthy choice. Whether it’s a snack or a meal, the exercises you should be doing more regularly, or the doctor’s visits you keep putting off, it’s seemingly much easier to, well, not really pay all the much attention to it.
So that’s where we come in - and by "we" we mean our Natural Foods Department, the Herb ‘N Jungle Supplement shop, and New Year, New You, our FREE Health & Wellness Expo.
This year, we’re filling up Oscar Event Center with almost 60 booths of screenings - brought to you by our amazing partners, Mercy Health - Fairfield - and vendors offering samples and demos, as well healthy and fun activities for adults and children alike. But where do you start?
Have no fear! We’re here to help.
Here are 5 things you absolutely have to do this weekend at New Year, New You!
Every year, one of the highlights of our New Year, New You Health & Wellness Expo are the physical activities we have available to participate in! Grown-ups can join us for Yoga, Zumba, and Tennis instruction throughout the day, and the kids are welcome to get in on the tennis fun, as well. We’ll have a balloon artist and face painter at the event, as well, so kids can work out their imaginations and their muscles! Check out the schedule of events below.
Our awesome partners from Mercy Health - Fairfield are setting up over 20 booths that will offer you a variety of ways to understand and maintain a healthy lifestyle in the new your. On-site screenings, education, and more will be ready and waiting. All you have to do is take those first steps up to the booth and you’ll be on your way to healthier 2018!
Natural Foods & More
Delicious and healthy are not usually a combination of words used to describe natural foods, but we’re here to make sure you know just how delicious eating healthy can be. Organic produce, gelato, and locally made hummus, as well as snacks and beverages, will be available to sample for everyone who joins us inside Oscar Event Center. Hey, you never know… you might just find a few things you won’t want to live without! Be sure to stop by the 80 Acres Farms booth, try out some gelato from Ciao Bella, and sample some awesome, locally made gluten-free and natural wares from Chubby Bunny and Chickpea Chicks! And don’t forget, everything we have available for sampling is available in our stores - so you know exactly where to find them!
In case you didn’t know, we’re all about kombucha. It’s flavorful, refreshing, and most importantly, full of health benefits! We recently opened our very own Kombucha Bar inside our Fairfield store which features first fermentation kombucha from our friends Fab Ferments, as well as offerings from GT’s. That’s how much we like it. We’ll have samples floating around the Event Center, and will have kombucha on tap at the Bar (some of which will be for those 21 and over due to its slight alcohol content), so you’ll have quite a few opportunities to find a flavor or two that you’ll enjoy. Trust us, you don’t want to miss trying this totally unique beverage while you’re here!
Now, Keep Going!
Okay, we said 5 things! We know! But hear us out. This one’s important…
You’ve checked out some new, healthy food options. Talked to Mercy Health professionals. You’ve tasted some great products, learned about some healthy options that can help improve daily life, and maybe even gave yoga a shot and enjoyed it… What’s next? KEEP GOING! Plan healthy meals, get some exercise, schedule regular check-ups and screenings. The name of the event might be New Year, New You, but it’s meant to educate and empower, show you a few new and exciting products, and inspire you to live a happier, healthier lifestyle!
Check out the Event Page for more details, right here!
Oh, and here’s a handy map to check out out if you want to plan your experience ahead of time!
We dug deep into our cellars and pulled out some rare, hard to find, and all-around awesome goodies to share at our 2018 Barrel Aged Beer Bash, the only barrel aged beer festival in the area! From your big bourbon barrel aged stouts to crisp and funky sours and farmhouse ales, we had a little bit for everyone to enjoy!
We hope you enjoyed your evening trying some of these incredibly delectable beers. We'll see you at our weekly Pint Nights, future beer festivals, and of course, feel free to come by and visit the Tasting Bar any time! Cheers!
We love when companies combine charity with things that taste awesome, so when we heard about and tried a few things from Voodoo Chef, we knew we had to share it with as many people as we could!
Featuring hot sauces, BBQ sauces, spice blends, and rubs, Voodoo Chef takes a collective, collaborative approach to their creations while making sure that a portion of their sales go to benefit kids in a unique way. By partnering with a local school and other local businesses, Voodoo Chef is dedicated to bringing the culinary arts within reach to kids who may not normally have the opportunity to pursue them.
The products themselves, it turns out, are pretty fantastic and with the variety they offer, you’re bound to find something you like! Check out a few of our favorites:
Firehouse Smoked Pepper Hot Sauce - With the base pepper a smoked habanero, this one packs some serious heat while keeping it flavorful (which, as you know, is what I think a great hot sauce should be). This is a savory sauce, but will work well with just about anything you want to add some heat and flavor to - try it in your next chili, or even your next chicken noodle soup!
Smokehouse BBQ Sauce - We’re suckers for a good, smoky BBQ sauce, so this one hits all the right notes for us. With just a bit of cayenne, this one has a little warmth to it, but the sweet and smoky flavors are front and center. Great for ribs, on steak, or for something a little extra special on chicken wings or tenders.
Dirt Seasoning/Spice Blend - Okay… stick with us on this one. There’s coffee in it. A lot like our friends from Angry Irishman and their Red Eye rub, this one has ground coffee playing a key role in how it tastes. The big difference, though, is the sweetness from the brown sugar in the Voodoo Chef blend. This will take your ribs, steaks, and pork chops to a whole new level. Trust us.
Magic Signature Rub - Another sweet take on a rub, this is a great way to step things up a bit and really give pulled pork a little extra oomph. Lots of paprika and garlic, with some cumin and chili powder to round things out with some cane sugar and brown sugar… sorry… we’re getting a bit distracted thinking about this one…
Be sure to stop by and see your hot sauce geeks at Jungle Jim’s. We’re always here to answer questions and crack open a bottle or two for you to sample.
Until next time! Keep it flavorful, and keep it hot.

Cahill's has been making top quality cheddar in Ireland since 1910. With over 100 years of experience, they know a thing or two about what it takes to make something high quality, flavorful, and accessible.
Using only the best milk found in Newcastle West, Cahill's is on a mission to provide the best chedda, but often with a twist. In the past, we’ve happy carried a wide variety of their cheeses, including a Porter Cheddar, Whiskey Cheddar, and a Ardagh Wine Cheddar.
This year, we’re excited to have brought in their newest cheddar that’s created with a delicately balanced mix of blueberries and vodka. Surprisingly, the freshness of the blueberries pairs incredibly well with the punch from the vodka. It’s time to rethink cheese, especially cheddar, and we think this is a great way to try something new, different, and just plain awesome.
You can find Cahill’s Vodka Blueberry Cheddar for $21.99/lb. inside the Cheese Shop at both Jungle Jim’s locations.
The Cheese Shop
Sumo Citrus has arrived at Jungle Jim’s, and just in time! Regardless of how low the temperature gets outside, this California grown, Mandarin Orange varietal will bring memories of summer flooding back as soon as you start to remove the peel.
First introduced in the late 1970’s, Jungle Jim’s was, at one time, the farthest east you could purchase this juicy, sweet, and surprisingly easy going citrus. Packed with flavor, the name is derived from its signature bump, which looks somewhat like a sumo wrestlers topknot. Sure, they’re a little homely, but don’t let that fool you: these are some of the sweetest, least acidic oranges available, with every piece as delicious as the last.
Even better, peeling one of these awesome fruits is as easy as popping the bump off the orange, then peeling the skin off - which happens quickly, easily, and with little to no fuss. So it’s great for adults and kids alike!
Stop by either Jungle Jim’s location today to check them out and take some home to share (if you’re able… you might want to keep them all to yourself).
Jungle Jim’s Produce Department
Did you know that the Kombucha Bar at Fairfield is now open?! That’s right! Stop by today for a pint, howler, or growler of one of a dozen kombucha flavors on tap. Don’t know what we’re talking about? Read on!
What is Kombucha
Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that is highly effervescent. Originating in China, it’s been around since about the year 200 BC. Traditionally black or green tea is the base, then sugar and the SCOBY is added for fermentation.
Now, you may be asking, what exactly is a SCOBY? A SCOBY is a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast. In other words, this is where the magic happens. The yeast eats the sugar, which in-turn creates a small amount of alcohol. The alcohol is then converted by the bacteria into nutritious acids and probiotics. The first fermentation usually lasts around 7 days.
First Fermentation vs Second Fermentation?
Bottled kombucha goes through a second fermentation process which typically gives a stronger, more intense taste. This second fermentation is what carbonates the drink. When kombucha is kegged it only ferments once and the CO2 is added as the keg is tapped. First fermentation kombucha is much lighter in taste and some consider it easier to drink. If you don’t like the bottled stuff, we’re excited to provide the opportunity for you to give first fermentation kombucha a chance.
Kombucha on Tap!
For those already converted to the fun and funky world of kombucha, the newest addition to Jungle Jim’s Fairfield features 12 taps of first fermentation kombucha from our partners at Fab Ferments, as well as GT’s. Fans of Fab Ferments can look forward to an array of tasty beverages pouring from ice cold taps, which will be available to drink at the bar, or take home in our Kombucha Bar growlers.
If you’re looking for something with a little bit more oomph, we have a rotating selection of Unity Vibration kombucha beer, which makes it all the way to 8% ABV - so, of course, you must be at least 21 years of age to purchase.
For the uninitiated, or those who think they’re not fans, it’s time to experience kombucha for the first time, again. Why? First fermentation kombucha has a lighter, less intense flavor, but still many of the same benefits of bottled kombucha. The Kombucha Bar at Jungle Jim’s is our way to help bring a little funk into your life, one pint or growler at a time.
Check back soon for more info about the Kombucha Bar currently under construction at our Eastgate location (they’ll have a few other things to offer alongside kombucha, too). Opening date TBD!
The annual CityBeat Best of Cincinnati Award Nominations are NOW OPEN, and we would be honored if you would vote for Jungle Jim’s International Market! We were excited to earn first place in 6 - yes 6! - categories last year, as well as a few second places, but with your help, we can do even better this year - and even earn first place as Best Grocery Store! You’ll see our name in quite a few categories already, but if we don’t show up where you think we should, you can always write us in.
Best of Cincinnati voting will remain open through Thursday, February 1, so vote now, and vote often! Winners will be publicly announced in the annual glossy Best of Cincinnati issue, available March 28, 2018.
Thanks so much for your continued support, and for coming along with us on this crazy ride. We’ll see you in the aisles!
Jungle Jim’s Barrel Aged Beer Bash is an ode to all things barrel aged - be they stouts, porters, wild ales, sours, or any other kind of beer (yeah, we’ll even have a barrel aged kolsch). With over 100 beers to choose from - from all over the world - where do you even start?
We have a few ideas.
Check out what we recommend you take the time to try while you’re walking around the bash. And don’t worry, these are just a fraction of what will be available, and they’re ALL worth trying (responsibly, of course! There’s no way to try them all).
Founders Brewing Company - Canadian Breakfast Stout
If there’s one beer to wait in line for, it’s probably this one. Much heralded, CBS returned after a hiatus that had everyone in a fever pitch by the time bottles hit shelves. Rich, sweet, decadent, intense… lots of maple syrup hits the palate first, with bourbon, coffee, and chocolate rounding it out. It’s everything you want in a barrel aged stout, and absolutely a must try if you have the opportunity.
Listermann Brewing Company - Freedom Toast (Stout)
This one was limited in its own right, but hails from one of Cincinnati’s most formidable purveyors of barrel aged beverages. A stout with walnuts, maple, cinnamon, and nutmeg aged in bourbon barrels, this is another intensely flavored experience that you won’t want to miss.
Prairie Artisan Ales - Vanilla Noir (Stout)
Deschutes Brewery - The Dissident (Belgian-style Brown Ale)
A wild fermented Belgian-style brown ale with cherries, aged on oak. This is a tart, yet surprisingly smooth and approachable wild ale from one of the country’s most consistent breweries. We think this is a great way to break things up between some of the heavier flavors of the bash’s stouts, and a great beer on it’s own.
Figleaf Brewing Company - BA Black Solstice (Stout)
Another local offering, BA Black Solstice is all about the stout and the flavor of the barrels it was aged in. No adjuncts, just straight up notes of whiskey, vanilla, licorice and more. Oh, and this recently won the Best Barrel-Aged Stout title in the King of Ohio competition held last month. Don't miss it!
Boulevard Brewing Company - Cabernet Cask Imperial Stout
Following the packaging of the above mentioned (incredibly lengthily named whiskey), our barrel crew took possession of the barrels from Jefferson’s Reserve and immediately filled them with the base beer used to produce Imperial Stout, a prior Smokestack Series Limited Release. Over the course of nearly two years, our beer rested in the barrels coaxing out flavors of charred oak and vanilla alongside beautiful notes of blackberry and cinnamon from the whiskey all linked together with dark and dried fruits contributed by the cabernet as well as the Scottish yeast strain used to ferment the base beer. Cabernet Cask Imperial Stout is 100% barrel-aged.”
Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery - Babbling Brook (Saison)
We thought it might be a good idea to show the lighter, funkier side of the bash, because there are quite a few sours, wild, and farmhouse ales that will be ready for you to try. This one’s high up on our personal list. Aged in Vin Santo Casks, this is a mixed fermentation saison that speaks to the finesse Jackie O’s regularly shows to their non-dark beers. We cannot wait to sample this one.
Tickets are still available IN-STORE for this year’s Barrel Aged Beer Bash! With more than 100 beers available to sample, there’s something there for everyone. And don’t worry, the event itself is for everyone, too (so long as you’re 21 or over). It’s a great way to experience the wild side of beer, and challenge your perceptions of just what beer should taste like.
Check out the full list of what we’ll have to sample, all available to view on Untappd, right here!
