Argentine Reggianito is a cow's milk parmesan made in Argentina, and is modeled after the world famous Parmigiano Reggiano. In fact, Reggianito means “little Reggiano.” This is great alternative to Parmigiano Reggiano if you're looking to save a few dollars but not lose any of the quality of true Parmigiano Reggiano. It is firmer and a bit saltier than its Italian predecessor, but grates well and adds to any dish just as well.
Produced by an operation started by Italian immigrants that moved to Argentina after World War One, this cheese also played a big part in Parmigiano Reggiano getting its PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) because Italian cheese makers saw this cheese as being almost equal to their product.
Fun fact: Many shoppers in the US are sold this cheese as the common table "Parmesan".
You can find Argentine Reggianito at the Cheese Shop at both Jungle Jim’s locations for $9.99/lb.
