New Year’s Eve is here! The ball is about to drop, and it’s time to start untwisting that champagne bottle and get ready to pop the cork. While it’s something you may do every year, have you ever wondered where this tradition came from and what champagne, or sparkling wine, actually is?
All Champagnes Are Sparkling Wine, but Not All Sparkling Wines Are Champagnes
Champagnes and sparkling wines are created the exact the same way. They are both fermented like a wine, but more yeast and sugar is added when they are bottled to induce a second fermentation. As the yeast eat the sugars they create carbon dioxide, which in turn will carbonate the wine. This is why you see the crown cap, or cage made of wires, that holds down the cork. Without it, the carbon dioxide would push the cork out and all carbonation would be lost.
So what’s the difference between a champagne and a sparkling wine? In order to be classified as a champagne the wine must be produced within the Champagne region in France. The name champagne has been legally protected since the 1800s. If the wine is made outside of the Champagne region, it is just simply a “sparkling wine.”
Why Do We Drink Champagne During Special Occasions Like New Year’s?
In the early days of champagne, only the wealthiest noble families could afford to buy it, but as time went on, merchant class families started building their fortunes. They began to buy more and more champagne, but since they still could not afford to drink it regularly they would save it for special occasions. This tradition carried on throughout generations, and we still drink the bubbly for New Year’s and other celebrations throughout the year.
What Champagne or Sparkling Wine Should You Choose For Your New Year’s Toast?
TJ, our Fairfield wine manager, shared three of his favorites to consider for your New Year’s celebration.
We at Jungle Jim's International Market hope you have a wonderful New Year's. Make sure you stop in and grab yourself some bubbly on the way to your party. Cheers!
I am sitting at my desk in Jungle Jim’s International Market getting ready to write an article for our newsletter. It’s hard to believe tomorrow is Christmas! I pick up one of the many flavors of Hammond’s All Natural Candy Canes that are spread out in an array of colors across my desk and my memories sweep me back to a kinder, gentler time.
I remember back to my childhood days when I would wake up on Christmas morning and discover all of the wonderful things left for me under the tree! Hanging from the mantle would be my stocking with a candy cane draped over the top. To me that has always been the “Candy of Christmas!”
Here at the Jungle we carry the very best all-natural candy cane around - HAMMOND’S!
The Company began making candy 90 years ago with its founder Carl T. Hammond, Sr., whose motto was “Nothing is more important than quality.” That still holds true today. Hammond’s all-natural candy canes are free of artificial flavors, artificial colors, and corn syrup.
There are flavors for every taste. From the traditional Mint and Cinnamon, to Cherry and Strawberry. There are even more unconventional flavors such as Pomegranate, Ginger Bread, Pumpkin Pie and Root Beer. With so many DELICIOUS flavors to choose from, they are the perfect size for stuffing a stocking or hanging from your tree.
So stop by our Natural Foods Department and stock up on Hammond’s All Natural Candy Canes - “The Candy of Christmas, the memories of childhood.”
May your holiday season be wonderful and may this be your best Christmas yet!

This year, we thought we’d have a little fun in the International Department, so we’re excited to carry the widest variety in the area of liquor filled chocolates. With several varieties from Bohme Weinbrand and many others, you’re not going to find this interesting and delicious combo of real liquors and chocolate anywhere else - at least not in the variety we’re able to carry!
For both the chocolate and liquor fan, this is a match made in sweet treat heaven, and are the perfect stocking stuffers for friends and family (who are over 21, of course).
As we celebrate Holidays at the Jungle, be sure to stop by and see what else we have for you to share with friends and family!

One of the most sought after - and loved - candies during the holidays is, well, just about anything from German company Kinder. While their Kinder Eggs are quite popular (who doesn't love a chocolate egg with a cool toy or other suprise in the middle?), Kinder Happy Hippo's may just be closing in on that popularity!
Kinder Happy Hippo - Hazelnut and Milk
There's not much to be said for a photo, so we honestly think this is one of those experiences best left for actually trying. Smooth, creamy and delicious, there's a reason these are so loved both here and abroad. For fans of hazelnut and chocolate, it doesn't get much better (or more adorable) than this.
Kinder Happy Hippo - Milk and Cocoa
For those who want a pure chocolate experience, these Happy Hippos are gleefully filled with creamy cocoa, making this one of the most surprisingly decadent - and fun - chocolate experiences you could have this holiday season!
Kinder Bueno - 2 Varieties
Think of these as Twix, but without the caramel. Crispy, crunchy and filled with delicious hazelnut, these come in both milk chocolate and white chocolate. We're not sure which we like more (and we're thankful we don't have to choose)
Kinder Chocolate - Milk and Hazelnut
If you can't tell, Kinder is all about the filling. And these incredible chocolate bars are no exception. We said it before, and we'll say it again: there's a reason Kinder chocolates are so beloved. This straightforward chocolate bar is a perfect example of why.
Stop by either of our locations to check out our Kinder Chocolate selection (while they're availble) and make sure they find their way into your friends' and familys' stockings this year. We promise they'll become and instant favorite - but then you'll have to get them every year, we suppose...
